“Prepare for the astonishing reckoning of the Emmy Nominations 2023: A seismic revelation of snubs and electrifying surprises that is bound to stir controversy!”

Emmys give and Emmys take. In recently announced Emmy nominations this year, they have succeeded in rectifying a historic mistake and also perpetuated one of the greatest injustices in living memory. Normally, an optimistic person within me would want to start with good news, but still, it’s a “hesitation and surprise” reaction, so let’s begin with the tragedy. Emmy Nomminations!

Emmy Nomminations 2023!

Sarah Goldberg was not nominated for Emmy Nomminations. It’s unimaginable. In her brilliant portrayal of Sally Reed during the final season of HBO’s “Barry,” she managed to reach extraordinary new heights. She stepped in for her failing career in the present and played the role of Sally Reed, who was overlooked and underappreciated, existing under an imagined identity. And then she also played Sally Reed in the future, stumbling towards a semblance of peace. In this case, forget comedy or drama, leadership or support.

In terms of sheer weight, in terms of pure, impartial range, no other working actor this year could touch Sarah Goldberg. It’s not surprising that she was snubbed this year—aside from an initial Emmy nomination in Barry’s early seasons, she has consistently been overlooked—but the fact remains that she will never earn a Emmy nomination for this unbelievable performance, and that’s heartbreaking.

Emmy Nominations

My initial instinct was that Goldberg missed out on her Emmy nomination because she was a strong contender for the Barry comedy award. But that didn’t work out because What We Do in the Shadows, another notable flop this year, was involved. The programme garnered four Emmy nominations, but none of them were for comedy, despite the fact that it may be the best current example of pure, crazy humour on television. No writing, no performance. Yes, I’m sure the nominated sound design team is exceptional at their job, but it’s astonishing that the show failed in all the major categories. Emmy Nomminations!

Heat of The Emmy Nominations!

Undoubtedly, there are other snubs, as is always the case. Rachel Weisz played dual roles with devastating effect in Dead Ringers, and while the series wasn’t for me, her power in two roles (and traditionally baiting Emmy nomination-teasing) is hard to deny. And Steve Carell was marvelous in The Patient, portraying an enigmatic captive. His Emmy nomination for the role would have brought attention to a show that was overlooked from an offense perspective, but sadly, that didn’t happen. However, it’s heartening that Natasha Lyonne was nominated in Emmy Nomminations for Poker Face, but it’s a pity that the show didn’t offer her anything beyond a foolhardy role.

The Emmy Nomminations love consistency, as evidenced by the hefty number of nominations in Emmy Nomminations recently received by Succession for its final season. However, every year brings surprising snubs and welcome surprises. This year is no different, with a few unexpected twists (Justice for Elizabeth Olsen!) while several lesser-anticipated projects (well done, jury duty!) received accolades. Below, we’ll review some of the least expected moves in the 2023 Emmy nominations.

Wonder: Ted Lasso

Ted Lasso’s chances of succeeding in the Emmy nominations and putting up a similarly great performance as he did in his first two seasons, when he received numerous acting in Emmy nominations and won the prize for Best Comedy Series consecutively, were uncertain.

Despite earning less positive reviews for its third season, the Apple series nevertheless managed to secure an astonishing 21 nominations in Emmy Nomminations, making it the fourth most nominated show of the year and the most of any comedy series.

Jason Sudeikis, Juno Temple, Hannah Waddingham, and Brett Goldstein are all returning nominees in Emmy Nomminations, while Phil Dunster earned his first nomination. Sam Richardson, Sarah Niles, Brendan Hunt, and Harriet Walter also received guest acting nods. This surprising pile-up suggests that Ted Lasso might once again be a strong contender for taking home the comedy series title for the third time. -Rebecca Ford

It seems like every year we anticipate the breakthrough of Taylor Sheridan’s beloved Yellowstone universe. Well, this wasn’t the year. The original series failed to secure any Emmy nominations, including for its lead actor Kevin Costner. There was hope that the spin-off, 1923, could gather more love, especially with its powerhouse performances by film veterans Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. However, like Yellowstone, the series also missed out on any nominations. -RF Emmy Nomminations!

Wonder: Jury Duty

Jury Duty was somewhat of a hidden gem this year, captivating audiences and quickly becoming a beloved and talked-about new series for Emmy Nomminations. The show, based on an ordinary person who thought they were working on an ordinary jury but was actually in a hidden-camera show surrounded by actors, found its place in voters’ hearts and earned nominations in Emmy Nomminations for Outstanding Lead Actor (James) alongside a comedy series nomination in Emmy Nomminations. Mercedes, who brilliantly embodies her own version. -RF

Snub: Peacock’s Face

The Peacock series had some strong momentum going into the Emmy Nomminations but surprisingly missed the list of nominated comedy series. Nonetheless, its Emmy Nomminations performance can still be seen as a big win for Peacock, as the mystery series created by Ryan Johnson has garnered a total of four nominations in Emmy Nomminations, including acting Emmy nominations for stars Natasha Lyonne and Judith Light, as well as nods for production design and stunt coordination. -RF

Wonder: Welcome to Chippendales

It’s always difficult to predict which fall premiere will stay in voters’ minds. But clearly, the Television Academy couldn’t get Welcome to Chippendales out of its head. With Maré Barlett’s compelling performance and overall profile on TV, it was considered a strong contender for approval. However, Kumail Nanjiani’s inclusion in the fiercely competitive lead actor race is a true triumph, as has been the case with Ana de Armas and Julieta Lewis, not only defying vote-splitting but also collectively making it into the supporting actress field. This is Lewis’s first Emmy nomination in 20 years, and it’s also the first Emmy nomination for de Armas, who has recently gained recognition for her extensive work on television. -DC

Snub: Only Murders in the Building

Once again, making the double-digit Emmy nominations list, Only Murders in the Building became a favorite of the Television Academy. But due to a significant drop in acting branch support and the lack of a comedy competition, it ended up with only five major acting spots, requiring some tough choices—and resulting in a surprising omission of Steve Martin. Clearly, with more restrictive ballots, voters had to decide between him and his co-lead Martin Short, ultimately favoring the latter. -DC

Wonder: The Vanderpump Rule

If you’ve started watching Bravo’s reality hit this year, you’re definitely not alone. You may have already known—the rest of us who didn’t skip through all the Scandovian drama—why many of us had been waiting for the success of Emmy’s recognition for quite some time. It took a whole decade, but finally, in its last season, Vanderpump found itself honored with its first Emmy nomination alongside unstructured reality program. -David Canfield

Snub: Steve Martin, Only Murders in the Building

Making the nominations list twice, Only Murders in the Building has become a favorite of the Television Academy. However, due to dwindling acting branch support and limited spots in the comedy category, the show was only left with five major acting Emmy nominations, resulting in a surprising exclusion of Steve Martin. Clearly, with stricter ballots, voters had to make difficult choices, leaving him and his co-lead Martin Short in a competition, ultimately favoring the latter. -DC

Wonder: Chippendales Welcome

It can always be tough to tell which fall premieres will remain in voters’ memory. But it’s clear that the Television Academy couldn’t get Chippendales Welcome out of its mind. Mare Barlett’s TV performance and overall profile led to an expected strong contender, but Kumail Nanjiani entering the crowded lead actor race is a real win, as has been the case for Ana de Armas and Julieta Lewis, not only avoiding vote-splitting but also collectively making it into the supporting actress field. This is Lewis’s first Emmy nomination in 20 years, and it’s also the first Emmy nomination for de Armas, whose recent extensive work on television has received belated recognition. -DC
